The Sillar Route in Arequipa is a route full of history and living culture where the origin of the name “The White City” is discovered and since when the Sillar stone was used as construction material for homes, churches and mansions. Find out about the formation and extraction of this stone of volcanic origin called Ignimbrite and meet the stonemasons who work in the extraction.
ITINERARY:
9:00am Our service begins with pickup from your Hotel in the center of Arequipa.
9:30 am 45 min trip. towards the Ruta del Sillar, which is a tourist route, where you visit the quarries where the ashlar was formed.
The first visit is to the Añashuayco Quarry, which is currently fully operational and allows you to appreciate an immense wall with cliffs several meters high.
This place provides information about ashlar, its production and the uses to which it has been given. On the wall of this quarry you can see a carved image of the Church of the Company of Jesus made by the stonemasons.
Interaction with some of the characters who are dedicated to extracting the ashlar to get an idea about this work.
Then we continue to the Culebrillas ravine, located 30 minutes away. Arriving at this place, the approximately 20-minute walk begins inside the canyon with walls 15 to 20 meters high that were formed by the passage of water.
At the end of the walk we will be able to see petroglyphs recorded by a pre-Inca culture called Wari.
Finally, you can see the Apachetas (stacked stones), which are a symbol of respect and gratitude to Pachamama.
Return to the city of Arequipa and arrival at approximately 1:00 p.m. near the parade ground.
