The Toro Muerto Petroglyphs are located in the Majes valley, Uraca district, northwest of the city of Arequipa at a distance of approximately 163 km. from Arequipa 2 hours and 30 minutes by car. Perhaps it is the richest area of ​​rock art in the world.

Toro Muerto is an open book silenced by the passage of time, the figures there represent plants, animals, anthropomorphic beings and geometric shapes in an approximate area of ​​5 km. The ancient carvers used various objects to give impressions to the stones, with various techniques. such as striking, scratching, chipping and percussion. The magic of the desert and its mystical messages engraved on its stones remain in a deep repose of time.

Declared a World Heritage Site at the First World Rock Congress in 1986.
Declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation by the National Institute of Culture of Peru on January 29, 2002.
In 2019 it was inscribed on the Tentative List of World Heritage of the 1972 UNESCO Convention, confirming the Outstanding Universal Value of the site.

Studies:
According to research carried out in Hannover, Germany. This place has had influences from Wari, Collagua and Inca cultures.
The French Mission project led by Henry Reichlen in 1965, among the cultural finds made were lithic tools, some of which probably could have been used for the production of petroglyphs.
These materials are currently in the deposits of the Musée du quai Branly in Paris and in deposit “G” of the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History of Peru in Lima.
